What is the purpose of education by Amir - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
The purpose of education is to help you to be better than you were before. Without an education, you’re ill-equipped to pursue what you want to pursue. An education exposes you to new ideas and broadens your horizons, which enables you to grow personally and professionally. The purpose of an education is to learn enough to have success on your own.
Globally, the purpose is to create good members of society; nationally, the purpose is to create good citizens; individually, the purpose is to cultivate growth in knowledge, understanding, remain competitive in the global marketplace, have cultural literacy, utilize critical thinking, create discipline-specific competences, and synthesize all you learn to your personal use.
In my case, as an actor, the purpose of education is to have a solid foundation on which to build upon and grow, to learn all the techniques available and create my own process that works for me, to make mistakes and learn from them, to keep me going for as long as I want. The purpose of an education is to find, learn, and apply the tools you need to sustain a career for however long you want. In my case, that’s for as long as I’m alive.
Ignorance is bliss but an education alerts you to the possibilities of others and, more importantly, you. When you realize you have worth, you end up investing in yourself and pursuing your dreams. The purpose of an education is to make people aware of that so they make the decision to go after what gives them meaning in life instead of denying themselves the opportunity to live a fuller life.
