Life and Leadership by Amina - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

When thinking about the necessary tools needed for college achievement, a popular answer that comes to mind for many is a high GPA. While good grades are essential for success, there are other aspects of life that must be mastered. Often times we forget what higher education is really about—it is a time to learn about our strengths and weaknesses and how we can apply that knowledge to a future career path. One of the best ways for an individual to learn about himself or herself is to place themselves in a position of leadership. Having to represent others’ views and desires is a special talent that when conquered, can prove to be very valuable tool in life. By taking on this higher responsibility, a person can find themselves and what they really stand for.

Skills required by a great leader include humility, intelligence, honesty, drive, and integrity. All of these traits are also required for an individual to evolve into a moral citizen of society. When asked whether or not leadership skills are necessary for college, a very resounding “yes” is the answer. Becoming a leader helps people to gain valuable life skills that can be used while in college and in later, post-education years.
