Language Learning Beyond the Classroom by Amber - September 2024 Scholarship Essay

My favorite non-traditional way to learn is through immersing myself in different languages and cultures, particularly by watching TV shows and movies. As a child, I developed a love for world languages, often finding myself captivated by shows like *Ni Hao, Kai-Lan* and *Dora the Explorer,* which offered glimpses into various cultures and languages. These early experiences shaped my interest in languages and showed me the power of engaging, context-based learning.

As I’ve grown, I’ve continued this approach to language learning by combining traditional methods like study sheets and language apps with more immersive and enjoyable practices. While apps like Duolingo provide a foundational understanding of vocabulary and grammar, I find that watching TV shows and movies offers a richer learning experience. This method allows me to grasp the nuances of accents, dialects, phrases, and slang that are often missing from formal education.

Currently, I am teaching myself Korean and Thai, and I have chosen to learn by watching Korean and Thai dramas. This method goes beyond rote memorization or repetitive exercises; it immerses me in the culture, context, and emotion behind the language. I get to hear how native speakers use the language in real-life situations, which helps me understand the subtleties and intricacies of pronunciation, tone, and context. For instance, watching a Thai drama exposes me to everyday conversations, cultural references, and idiomatic expressions, which are far more effective in learning a language than simply memorizing phrases from a textbook.

By following this immersive approach, I find that I retain information more efficiently and enjoy the process of learning. I believe that the key to mastering any subject lies in understanding one’s unique learning style and finding ways to incorporate that style into the learning process. For me, it’s about engaging with content that is both entertaining and educational, allowing me to learn in a way that feels natural and enjoyable.

Learning through media also helps me appreciate the cultural context in which a language is used, giving me a deeper understanding of the people who speak it and their way of life. This method doesn’t just teach me the mechanics of a language; it enriches my worldview and exposes me to new perspectives.

In conclusion, my favorite non-traditional way to learn is by immersing myself in different languages and cultures through TV shows and movies. This approach aligns with my learning style and allows me to acquire new languages more effectively and enjoyably. Currently, I’m applying this method to learn Korean and Thai, and it has proven to be both rewarding and effective. It reminds me that sometimes the most efficient way to learn is to find a method that resonates with you personally.
