#OnBroadway by Amaya - April 2018 Scholarship Essay

I chose this hashtag because my love for as long as I can remember has been to perform on Broadway. Musical Theatre is in my soul. Musical theatre keeps me alive. Literally. When my father died when I was a freshman in high school, I went off the deep end for a while. I had to take virtual school for a year before I could re-enter public school and cope with everything. But even while all that was happening, I kept auditioning and performing. It is what kept me alive and brought me back to myself. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and that reason was that I found myself able to attend our area's premier performing arts high school for my junior and senior years, and I have found lifelong friends there, I have gained valuable knowledge of the theatre industry, I have performed in plays and musicals that I never dreamed possible, and I even learned how to construct, paint, and design sets, costumes, wigs, props, and stage manage a show on my own. This year, I'm directing my own one-act play. All of these things have set me up to be able to choose among several competitive programs for college, and although it is expensive to attend, my dreams of being an actor on Broadway someday are all that much closer thanks to dreaming big and the love and support of my theatre family. #OnBroadway here I come!
