To Dream The Impossible Dream by Amanda - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
Benjamin Franklin said that, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” His point, that education is important, is one of the most powerful pieces of advice that we have. Knowledge is what changes the world. Knowledge is what fuels creativity. Knowledge is what gives us power. For my college experience, I would be the most thankful for the opportunity to learn. Some students don’t see the substantial effects of education, or realize how blessed they are to have the liberty to learn, to seek and to find. In going to college I will have the opportunity to learn about myself, topics I am interested in and the world around me.
The more we learn, the more we understand ourselves. College gives us a different experience; we have the chance to become more self-reliant. I’ll be learning how to live on my own, cook for myself, do my own groceries, buy my own school supplies and I’ll be learning how to be independent. This type of ability will allow me to become more proficient and I will be more confident in my abilities. Being confident is an important part of college- it pushes you to become more, to become better. It pushes us to be the best version of who we can become.
College is the chance to explore the possibilities and to stretch out your horizons. By taking college courses, you are preparing yourself for the future. The knowledge that you gain in your generals, in your Math class, Language class, Science class - any class - is supplying you with the groundwork to a solid future and a reliable foundation. If I am willing to pay the price, then I can become whatever I want to become. College helps us prepare and plan, and it gives us options that would never have been open to us before.
We live in a global economy; the decisions one country makes has the power to effect other countries. College can be an eye-opening experience for many people. Campuses are often a diverse mix of people. By being immersed in this kind of environment, we can better comprehend different cultures and different ideologies. I think that it is so important for each of us to be open-minded, to see the world not just as we see it, but the way others see it. Attending college gives us the chance to look around us and see the world and the beauty that it holds, not just for all the similarities, but also for the differences.
Someone once said that we are the sum of all our experiences. I think that a college education is priceless. Through learning, hard work and dedication we truly understand who we are. Education gives me the chance to become a better person, and I therefore will have more talent and skill to serve my community and family with. I will be the most thankful for all education I receive because knowledge helps our dreams become realities. I will be thankful for learning how to be more creative, more understanding and most of all, becoming a better person. And in the words of Helen Keller, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”
