Self Love by Alisun - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
My senior quote would be, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent," by Eleanor Roosevelt. Not only is Eleanor Roosevelt a phenomenal speaker and advocate for human rights, the quote itself also resonates with me on a personal level. Throughout my life, I have had incredible trouble with my confidence level. In middle school, all kids are naturally insecure, but I was dealing with another side of emotions as well. In the sixth grade, I started middle school and I was excited because I started band class for the first time. On one particular day, my teacher asked me to play by myself in front of the class, and I turned blood red. My heart started pounding and I began to cry. I was a able to leave the class room, but I still had no idea what had just happened. A few months later, I would be diagnosed with a panic disorder. I continued to have panic attacks in my band class, and ultimately made the decision to quit band for the sake of my mental health.
Later I became depressed because I realized how I was holding myself back from all the things I could be doing, simply because of my anxiety. I had days when I didn't want to get out of bed, and my parents began to notice. I began to doubt myself in every way and I knew I needed help.
My parents eventually brought me to therapy, and I am slowly still learning to gain back my self confidence. I am a little afraid to go to college because I know it will be more stressful than college, but as Eleanor Roosevelt said, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent," even myself.
