Technology vs. The Classroom by Alexis - July 2022 Scholarship Essay

When I was a little girl starting kindergarten, using computers was a treat, not a necessity. My teacher and her students got along just fine without the use of screens on a day to day basis. We would learn through hands on teaching and imagination. But in the year 2022 it’s a whole different story. You walk into a classroom and all you see are children on computers, tablets or phones doing their work.

This isn’t how students should be learning, they should be doing physical work with other students. As my levels of education increased so did our in-class screen time. I had one class where we did all of our work on a computer and once we were done, everyone would just go on their phones in complete silence. I really hope to see a change in the next ten years of the involvement of screens in the classrooms. While technology, as a whole, can be helpful, there needs to be a limit of how much screen time should be allowed in a classroom. Teachers need to start going back to the classic pen and paper way of teaching their students.

There has been research done that shows people are more apt to remember information that they have physically written versus just reading that information on a computer screen. This suggests that too much screen time can cause more harm than good especially when the students are young. If the younger student relies on screens too much, they will loose vital skills such as reading , writing and human interaction. Getting back to basics will save our new generation of students from loosing important skills for learning and growing.
