How has education shaped who you are today? by Alexis - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

How has education shaped who I am today?

My mother has always taught me that education will play an important part in my life and she has encouraged me to do the very best I could do while I am in school. I don’t believe I took it for granted but I do believe that in the beginning I wasn't listening good.

As I feel I have matured I began to realize what is important in my life. I want to become a doctor and work with young children. I thought take a few science classes in high school and it would be okay, I’ll be ready for what is going to happen after I graduate. But the more I started studying my health classes the more I realized there is more to it than just being in class. It has taught me that the work I will be doing in the medical field is important to the lives of those I will be taking care of. That I need to learn everything in order to be the best I can be in my field. The more I learned the more mature I have become.

I decided to become a doctor after I watched the fight my brother went through with his many illnesses. My brother was told at a young age he would never be able to walk, that he would not have use of his hands, but he overcame all of that. My brother got older and was taken out of school for two years because he was sick but through all of that he continued to educate himself, continued to strengthen himself and come May 2015 he will graduate from high school along with me. But through this whole process with him I kept educating myself on what he was dealing with and wondering how I would be able someday to help him. Watching my brother made me feel I was selfish. But the more I understood and read about him, the more I watched him struggle but still get good grades the more I realized that I need to keep educating myself if I am going to make something out of myself.

Education is not just going to school for 12 years it all about helping to build character. I owe everything I am and everything I hope to be to school. Without the education I have received during my lifetime the friends I have met, the teachers that have been there day and not for me I wouldn't be able to move on to a more positive place in my life. I wouldn't be able to have a chance to even become a doctor to be given a chance to help other children who can’t have the chances my brother has or will have. Education has fulfilled me and I’m a more positive person because of it.
