What I Know Now by Alexis - April 2016 Scholarship Essay

Going through high school I had to learn a lot on my own with no advice. After going through the experience the one piece of advice that I think younger students should know is you have to be true to yourself. Throughout my years of high school I have been super friendly and outgoing. I got along with everyone. The reason being was I was so willing to change myself to get other people to like me. I was hardly who I really was, I was conforming to what everyone else wanted to be. I was never my true self throughout high school.

“It takes courage to grow up and turn out to be who you really are”, spoken by E.E. Cummings. People are always trying to force you to who they want you to be, or the idea that society thinks that you should be. People hardly grow up true to themselves, they grow up formed by society. Trying to be yourself in high school could be one of the hardest things you could do, it takes a lot of courage. Society will judge you with every choice you make, just make your own choices and respect yourself then others will respect you. Being yourself requires to be open-minded and introspective. This means that you will not let others make decisions for you that you should be making yourself.

There are signs that you are being true to yourself. You know that you are being true to yourself if you feel good about who you are and you are comfortable about yourself. Trying to impress people is not what you are worried about and do not care about being judged by other people. You have to be confident about all the choices that you make and do not worry about what other people think of your choices. In order to be true to yourself there are tips that you can follow to get you to be the person that you are. Follow your own common sense and do not let others influence you in your choices. Listen to what others have to say but make up your own mind in the end. Also stand up for what you believe in and make sure you do not let others tell you what they believe what is right and wrong. Make your own choices for yourself and what you believe is right.
