The Greatest Benefits of a College Degree by Alex - October 2024 Scholarship Essay

Hardly anyone in my family pursued higher education. Both of my parents work jobs that don't use a degree and so does the majority of my extended family. Ever since my parents and their family immigrated to this country before I was born, they have all worked entry-level jobs. I have heard the struggles my family went through with money and still see the struggles they go through today.
Seeing my family go through these struggles made me realize college is necessary in order to sustain a comfortable life. A college degree opens opportunities that were not available to my family and would allow anyone to be able to raise themselves economically. A college degree is important as it allows people to be able to acquire occupations that could provide endless amounts of goods for themselves and their families compared to occupations that do not require college degrees. People with college degrees are more inclined to achieve occupations with higher pay and more opportunities to promote upward compared to most entry-level jobs that my family works at that do not provide and substantial amount of potential to grow.
A college degree not only gives you the means necessary to earn a prosperous living, but also gives you an education that allows you to thrive in many general areas. A college education gives you advanced skills to write, formulate ideas, think critically, and problem-solve. Many of the skills you learn while completing a college degree are skills you can use in your everyday life. Having these skills makes living more enjoyable as you'll be able to solve different problems effectively as well as have the knowledge to navigate the everyday world in a sophisticated manner.
Even the part of my family that is around my age still struggles with going to college but I understand that a college degree would boost me from my family's financial standpoint and allow me as well as anyone to break the cycle of living a life without a college degree. I want to earn a college degree as it would not only benefit me but it would also benefit my entire family as I would be able to support them financially with an occupation that requires a college degree.
