What is your 10 year career plan? by Albright - March 2020 Scholarship Essay

One of the biggest epidemic ruining the future of the next generation in America is the Opioid Epidemic, which has led to many deaths thus increasing the amount of orphans in the Orphanages and breaking homes of many people. This all aroused from the increase in unnecessary drug prescription to minor disease and the inattentiveness to mental problems that could have been fixed by therapy. Seeing the effects of this epidemic on my friends--some of them have grown dependent on prescription drugs--made me interested in Psychology and the Pharmaceutical industry. Due to this reason, I want to major in Psychology. I want to become a well-informed clinical psychologist who will not be swayed by unnecessary prescription of medicine to patients, so that the Opioid epidemic will decrease. Therefore, my plan for the future is to go to college to learn the skills and knowledge needed for me to succeed in the filed of psychology.
My first plan is to double major in biology and psychology in Bard college, the college I’ll be attending. I know that medical school is very competitive so I plan to build up my resume my first year in college by not only joining STEM based organizations but also by serving my community through interning or volunteering in the psychiatry facility and participating in research. Since I want to make a difference in the ethical field of psychiatry and psychology, I want to participate in research concerning the ethical practices of the pharmaceutical industries and how that affects the field of psychology in terms of the prescription medicine.
Secondly, I plan to get a job as an assistant to a clinical psychiatrist to make money to take care of my parents and I. I plan to get as much scholarships as I can to attend the Emory Medical university to pursue my graduate degree in psychology. During this time, I plan to do my residency in local hospitals and shadow professional clinical psychiatrist to gain more insights in this field. I also want to build more connections with people who are knowledgeable in psychology to help guide me on available places hiring new psychiatrist.
Lastly, after graduate school, I plan to get my certificate to practice psychiatry. With the certificate, I plan to help people with mental issues by prescribing fewer addictive medications as possible and using effective therapy to help them in hopes of decreasing the number of people dying everyday due to opioid abuse.
In conclusion, my plan for the future is to further my education as much as possible to gain the skills to help me achieve my dream of not only helping people struggling with mental problems but also helping in the fight against unethical prescriptions and opioid abuse. I want my plan to make a difference in the lives of the next generations.
