The Story of A Generation by Alanah - March 2023 Scholarship Essay
Growing up, education was something that was expected of me. I remember being a little kid and my mom would bring home flashcards that I would have to practice with. Sitting on the bathroom floor reading those flashcards was definitely a grueling task. This was something that was expected of me though. After all, my parents were both educators and placed a lot of value on learning from a young age. I did not realize the value of education until I was a little bit older.
When I was old enough to finally start school, I cared more about running around on the playground than actually sitting down in class and listening to the teacher explain about reading and writing. I despised math as a kindergartner. I was too busy focused on playing with my Barbies to understand just how vital doing homework and learning was.
That was until my grandmother showed me the true value of education. My grandmother was also a former educator who had retired when I was born to babysit and teach me. When I was in kindergarten, she started making learning quite enjoyable for me. It was no longer such a daunting task for me, but it was something I thoroughly enjoyed doing. My grandmother was so patient with me and made it seem more like a game than a necessity. She would patiently go over my spelling words with me and repeat them back. For the longest time, I wanted to be a teacher just like she had been. Although she is getting older, I will still talk to her occasionally about schoolwork and surprisingly English and Math are now two of my favorite subjects in school.
