Criminal Forensics by Adrianna - May 2023 Scholarship Essay
I’ve always been fascinated with the complexity of our legal and criminal justice systems. The duty that legislators have in establishing and creating laws - in cooperation with those that uphold them - it’s literally a balancing act that happens every day against the backdrop of our society.
The main objective of the criminal justice system is to reduce and stop crime. They achieve that by using different branches of law enforcement. When I imagine myself working in this field, I am instantly drawn to the police force. I have a genuine passion for ensuring that others feel safe and protected, so I believe this role would be extremely rewarding for me. Laws are meant to protect us every day, and without any laws to punish the offenders, there would be no consequences. This would set a dangerous precedent and inspire others to further break the law. To keep our government fully functioning, there must be order. It is essential and guides our citizens in the right direction. Looking at all of those who came before me - even some that have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of public safety - it is incredibly inspiring. I can only hope that throughout the course of my own career, I can make that big of an impact on someone else.
On the other hand, I also find it interesting how large of a role that forensics play within our justice system. I am generally drawn to scientific and mathematic equations, so when a new forensic class was introduced at my high school, I was eager to jump on the opportunity to enroll. I learned how arbitrary items like white powder and moldy food, play such an important role in the process. Scientists analyze physical evidence and samples to discover the connection between the crime and the perpetrator. It’s captivating - and the more hands-on experience I can gain in the classroom, the better equipped I’ll be for a career in this field. And it may be taboo, but oddly enough, I’ve also found inspiration from popular TV shows like Law and Order, Criminal Minds, and NCIS. Even though Hollywood romanticizes forensics, media can be a heavy influence and I’m not ashamed to admit that my DVR is full of all my favorite reruns!
No matter which path I choose; the court system, social work or the private sector, the possibilities are endless. Obtaining a degree in criminal justice is just a foot in the door to a host of different professions. My main goal is to help the community. Crime doesn’t take a vacation, so unfortunately, there will always be a position waiting once I earn my degree. I’m up for the challenge and look forward to this exciting and rewarding career. Not many people can say that. My hope is that my contributions will make this world a better place. It’s the least I can do for my country, which has already given so much to me.
