A Dream to Make a Difference - Varsity Tutors Scholarship Essay by Adessa - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
While some people fear the dreaded question of “Who will I be when I grow up,” others distress over what their New Year’s resolution will be. Personally, I’ve never felt the desire to make such promises because I don’t know what the coming year will bring, especially since I live in a very low income household. In most cases, an event will probably happen which will change my mind about keeping that resolution. Though, if I were to choose a resolution to assist me in becoming a better student in 2016, then I would choose this to make a difference for people who have little or no voice. Why would I decide upon something extremely difficult and substantial? How could I possibly think that I could accomplish this?
First of all, I believe nothing can be accomplished alone by just a single person. It takes several artists, writers, and producers working together to make a movie, just like a brain tumor surgery can’t be attempted without doctors and other medical staff. I believe that this is proof that teamwork is extremely important not only for one’s personal resolution, but also for the entire world. To become a better student this year, I plan to utilize this moral of teamwork which I believe will push me closer to my dream of becoming a Disney Animator. I wish to follow in this dream to make movies because I wish to inspire all people, no matter if they are battling cancer, needing a moment of peace, or desiring a way to sit and still feel a sense of thrill. While teamwork of movie making is important, there is another moral I believe is required to make my resolution stay true.
Starting in 2009, I began embarking on short-term mission trips to Ukraine in partnership with Tomorrow Clubs which teaches children in developing countries, such as Ukraine, how to learn life skills and about the truth of Jesus Christ. I was one of the Americans who were blessed to become part of a team who went to these Tomorrow Club camps and immersed myself into their communities. The people of Ukraine opened up their homes, gave us English speaking visitors food which cost them a year’s worth of pay, and were always willing to humble themselves to provide us spoiled Americans with the best care that they were able to give. They did all of this knowing that they may not receive any reward for their kindness. It is my hope that I too can learn this humility for I believe it is one of the ingredients in making a difference for others. It may seem to most people that all of what these Ukrainians did was for nothing, yet by giving us American’s a place to stay for the week, several children were introduced to love and hope.
When you give someone hope, I believe that you are making a difference and when I am patiently holding a door open for people then once again a difference is being made in someone’s life. Many people have told me that I am a listener, which I do agree with. A listener patiently sits and waits as people pour their hearts out; sometimes without the listener uttering a word in response. Patience is vital to making a difference because it does take time. In addition, there are people who excel at this because of their disabilities. Some people may think for these disabled citizens to have no voice, but I disagree. Those who have patience do deserve for their voice to be heard and by heeding their valuable advice, I believe that we all can make a difference in our own ways.
I believe that all people, no matter who they are or where they come from, can make a difference, yet there are cases where their voice is so faint that people who possess booming commands don’t hear them. My New Year’s resolution to make a difference for people will indeed assist me in becoming a better student this new year because of the journey that it takes to reach that point and what occurs afterwards. I don’t have the ability to do it alone. Instead, I plan to work together with the people around me, as well as with my friends and family to accomplish this task. I also pray that I do learn how to humble myself even when opportunities of wealth and popularity arrive at my doorstep. Finally, by incorporating these morals into my life, I hope to also include the wisdom of patience. In practicing these morals and following my animating dream, I believe that I will become the best student that I can be all while I strive towards making a difference for all people who have a quiet, but important voice.
