Einstein by Adelyn - August 2024 Scholarship Essay

When I think of education and the art of knowledge, the first person who comes to mind is Albert Einstein who once said “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”

To me, Einstein is not an inspiration but a goal and a mindset, I too want to be a phenomenal scientist but not the traditional scientist you’re probably thinking of. Where Einstein was an incredibly acclaimed mathematician and physicist, I want to be a renowned forensic pathologist.

Forensic sciences have been a fascination of mine since I was an eight-year-old watching Dateline with my mom. When I was a kid through my pre-teen years, I wanted to become a detective and as I grew up I discovered a love for science. One day while researching future careers for a school project, I came across forensic sciences which I had never considered an option. The more I explored my options, the more enamored I became. I understand that most people think that being a coroner is creepy and strange however; I believe that the human body is one of nature’s most incredible creations and deserves to be explored and studied.

After I graduate high school, I plan to attend UW-Platteville to get my Bachelor’s in Forensic Investigation and minor in Biology. The Forensic Investigation program at Platteville is the first and only public college in my home state of Wisconsin to offer a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Investigation. It also allows a choice in what you’d prefer to do post-higher education, such as a crime scene or laboratory focus, I’ll likely choose the laboratory focus. However, I find crime scene investigation interesting too!

Following undergrad, my plans get murky as is expected with all future aspirations. I’ll have to go to medical school to obtain an M.D. I’m choosing to major in Forensic Investigation and minor in Biology to stand out among other applicants. Succeeding med school is four years of residency in an anatomic pathology and clinical pathology program, and a year will be needed for a fellowship that will focus solely on forensic pathology. Of course, this all comes with various tests, exams, and certifications sandwiched inbetween which will all be obstacles in their own right.

When I’m faced with the question of what my next big education goal is my initial thought is graduating high school since it’s first in a long line of future accomplishments. The real answer, however, is that my next big education goal will be learning how to improve myself and my work ethic through unconventional measures while maintaining the big picture. I expect this time in my life to be very humbling and filled with trials and tribulations for me to learn from but in a twisted way, I’m excited to face these challenges because it means that I am one step closer to the career of my dreams.
