What is it Like? by Abigail - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

If I had the choice to make an extracurricular activity in school, it would be sort of a "job exploration" activity. As in going out and volunteering at different places or visiting different jobs, for example, a police department or science lab, electric company, etc. The purpose of these visits would be to show off and experience what different jobs would be like and help explore students' interests.

The main idea is to amplify skills that they might have not known they had or strengthen their interest in that career. These visits would be planned and would involve following the employees around asking questions and with permission trying things out. There would be a variety of different jobs, including visiting sports teams or professional marching bands. The sole purpose is not to force kids to find their passion right away, but perhaps help them find something that they might care about or push their current passion even more. As the title says, what is it like to have a career in law per se?

I think it would really help because I knew if there was a program like that where I live, it could help me see what actual jobs are like in the departments I am interested in. Kids should not need to know immediately what they want to do, and I believe this program would be a positive influence on many students' lives.
