Focusing on my academics, I chose Xavier University of LA as my undergraduate school consciously to prepare me for the heavy load of math and science in medicine. My path at Xavier continued to grow when I decided to become a Drill Instructor of General Chemistry I & II during my freshman year. My job requirements as a Drill Instructor were to administer weekly quizzes on the material learned in General Chemistry lecture, grade all coursework, and provide assistance on the General Chemistry content.
After graduation, I decided to become the Organic Chemistry Staff Instructor at Xavier after realizing I needed a gap year to fully prepare myself for graduate school. In the Organic Chemistry Center I became a mentor to the young students and provided guidance to being a well-rounded college student. Mentoring students has given me the satisfaction that I am reaching people from all backgrounds on the importance of education and networking.
During my gap year, I actively researched programs that would make me a more competitive candidate for nursing school. My best choice was Mississippi College Master's Biology Program; in the city of Clinton I became more efficient in my study skills by taking higher-level medical course work. Also, becoming a student researcher with a focus on student anxiety and working memory in the Biology Department was a great way for me to apply the coursework I learned in class into the hours I logged in the lab with participants of the study. In Mississippi, volunteering at the Mission First Medical Dental Clinic in Mississippi was a way for me to make my way back to the community, gain exposure to patient care and proper bedside manner.
In 2019, opening a business in a world-renowned food city was one of the most ambitious things I've ever done in my life. Although, like my endeavors of becoming a nurse, I decided to learn as much as I can about the industry and create a path for myself to become successful. I now own Tee Alex Catering, LLC based in the New Orleans Metropolitan Area with a focus on Creole Cuisine. The business is built on teamwork, building within the community, diligence, and communication skills.
After graduating with a Master's in Biological Science, I decided to go back into the classroom and teach Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, and Biology I at Ursuline Academy of New Orleans. I knew that this career would sharpen my basic science skills and cause my organizational skills to improve tremendously and it did just that. Every morning, I had to be prepared for all three courses in the likely hood that not only would I teach seventy-five minute classes but provide outside tutoring to my students at any moment. The balance of providing creative outlets and core science work in the classroom was doable only by sharpening my skills as a leader.
Through all of these experiences I have been preparing for my day to change another's child life in a medical office, the same way my pediatrician did for me in 2003 with one short visit. A science major must have social skills, a solid education, confidence in making difficult choices, and integrity. My life journey into the medical field has provided me with the foundation to become a great nurse and tutor.
