What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that every child should have the opportunity at the best education possible. I believe that everyone can learn; they just learn in different ways.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will talk with the student about school, hobbies and what they like to do for fun. I like to tell my students a little about myself. I like to break the ice, so to speak.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The student can become an independent learner by learning different strategies to help them be successful in any subject.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Make learning fun. Learning can be fun by giving students real-world scenarios with the latest "things" that they are interested in.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will break it down until they understand and start building skill from there. I may use manipulatives to help students have a "hands-on" approach to solving the problem.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Give students high interest reading books. Give students books that are on their academic level. Read with the student and break from the reading by asking questions.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Giving a pretest to see where my students are academically. I also like to give them problems of what they already know so they can have some success.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will intertwine it with their interests.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Read over the assignment with the student. Read and paraphrase the directions. Have the student explain to me what they are to do.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I will give the student problems on their academic level or reading assignment on their reading level.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Pre-testing.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The material I use depends on the academic level of the student as well as the subject need. I may use technology or worksheets.
