Certified Tutor

I graduated last May from Beloit College- a tiny liberal arts college with a big personality. I got my BA in English Literature as well as completed the Pre-Medical track. I took the MCAT this past summer and on my lanta am I glad that I passed and don't have to take it again. I recently moved from Bloomington Minnesota to Rawhay New Jersey. I am passionate about theatre and love living in an area so close to the amazing hub that is New York City. I hope one day to have a theatre troupe that works alongside hospitals to perform for children and long term patients in order to bring them joy and aid their healing process.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would find a way to link that skill or concept to something that they already understand or something about which they are passionate.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

First, we would go through and define any words that they may not know the meaning to. Then we would read through a passage, and I would have them explain the main point of the passage back to me.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Engaging with them at their own level. Finding out what they enjoy and using that to help structure how I want to teach them.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Collaboration and communication are the keys to successful education.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a first session, I would get to know the student a bit first. Discover their likes, dislikes, hobbies, and passions. Then I can better formulate a practicum that best suites the student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By not directly giving them an answer but by guiding them through the process so they can discover the answers on their own.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find a way to tie it into something they enjoy. For example, if we are discussing Shakespeare's Othello, I could compare the struggle between Iago and Othello to teammates on a soccer team where the keeper receives all the credit and the defender gets overlooked.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have them explain what they learned back to me to ensure that they properly understood the material.
