Certified Tutor
I am a 2013 graduate of Swarthmore College with a B.A. in mathematics and English literature, and I love tutoring both math and English. After graduating from college, I taught 10th grade math for a year in Newark, New Jersey. One of my favorite parts of being a teacher was working with students in a one-on-one setting. I love the process of guiding a student to where he or she is able to solve a problem or explain a concept independently. As a tutor, I endeavor not to simply "lecture" or tell the student the steps to solving a problem. Instead, I try to guide the student through the inquiry process, so that he or she is doing most of the mental heavy lifting. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy running, hiking, reading, and spending time with my family and friends.

What is your teaching philosophy?
As a teacher, I do not believe in telling a student exactly how to solve a problem, understand a concept, or analyze a passage. I think it is important for the student to engage in a process of inquiry, in which I can serve as a guide. In this model, the student -- rather than the teacher -- does most of the thinking, cognitive connections are made, and concepts are learned rather than simply memorized.
