Sarah

Certified Tutor

I discovered a passion working in education after I graduated from college. I began working at a Summer School with middle schoolers, worked with college students abroad, and then went to graduate school to become an educator. I have been a licensed teacher in MA for 3 years and I love teaching. It is by far one of the most exciting and rewarding careers to have.

Although I enjoy working with a larger classroom of students, I especially enjoy working 1-on-1 with students. There is incredible joy in working together to make progress towards a goal, or to discover capacities students didn't even know they had. Tutoring is a place where I strive not just to "teach something" but to work with the student to help them explore and discover their own abilities, and find strategies and habits that will work for them in the long term.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching is realized in learning. There is no such thing as "teaching something" if a student doesn't learn from it. Teaching requires energy, work, focus, and strategy from the teacher. It also requires energy, focus, and a willingness to struggle from the student. Ultimately, my teaching philosophy is subject-centered. In learning, the thing you are learning is in the center. Both the teacher and the student are responsible for and accountable to that learning.
