What is your teaching philosophy?
Students learn best with they are engaged, challenged, and inspired.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
It is important to learn about that student. What motivates them? What interests them? What are their hobbies? Students learn best when they trust their teacher. In order to build this trust, I would spend some time getting to know the student in our first session and sharing a little bit about myself with the student.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
A student becomes an independent learner when a teacher shows them how to get to the answer, rather than giving them the answer. As a teacher, I pride myself in inspiring my students and helping them realize their own abilities. By giving my students the skills they need and helping them see their own potential they not only become independent learners; they become confident independent learners.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I motivate students by using materials to supplement their learning that match what they are passionate about. I accomplish this through ensuring that I take the time and put in the effort to get to know my students.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student has difficulty, I would change the method being used to teach the student. Sometimes all we need to build understanding is looking at something in a new light.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
If a student is struggling in a subject it is very likely that, due to that struggle, they are losing interest in it or they are struggling because they already lack interest in the subject. One way I would engage students in that subject is to create supplemental materials using the student's interests outside of the subject to help them learn the skills need to master the subject they are struggling in.
