What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is "do, then learn." I believe that by putting a concept into practice, a student can learn from their mistakes, correct behavior, and have a deeper understanding of the concept they are trying to learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I would assess their previous knowledge. I want the student to reflect on their ability; I would also let them work a few problems on their own to see how they approach a problem or task.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Practice. Practice. Practice. By practice, I mean practice on their own time. Tutoring can only go so far; the student must also review the subject and work on it individually. It's like learning to ride a bike with training wheels, and then practicing without them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Failure is okay. Just accept it, learn from it, and move on. Don't feel discouraged because you're not getting a concept; keeping your mind in a fixed state of "I can't" can even prevent you from succeeding.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I'd try something new. If one method of learning the concept isn't working, I can adapt my teaching style to something else. Sometimes, a fresh perspective can change your success in learning a subject.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

They read the story out loud; reading and speaking at the same time makes you focus more on what the story is telling you.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Making sure they feel comfortable talking to me and asking me questions. I will not judge my students. They should be able to be honest about if they're understanding a subject or not.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Videos, pictures, and lots of examples. Learning on different platforms helps deepen their understanding of the information.
