I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

After graduating from Skidmore College, I moved to Milan, Italy and taught English to high school and university students. I also gave private lessons to students ages 7-31. While in college, I tutored in Italian, French and economics. I enjoy a challenge but think a fun and cheerful environment is the best way to learn.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in challenging and pushing students so that they can increase their confidence by amazing themselves through their own capabilities and work. I also believe every person learns at his or her own pace and it's important to work on an individual's strengths and weaknesses. There is nothing more rewarding than accomplishing something that you first thought you couldn't do.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

It depends on the subject, but largely I would try to assess the student's level.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving them strategies to work well and by teaching them the subject, rather than doing the work for them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By reminding them of everything they have already accomplished.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to find a different method to teach them the concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I try to break down the text a bit more. I also perhaps try to use a different text.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Establishing trust and not being too invasive.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would identify what they are struggling on.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Test them in different ways and repeat exercises.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

When a student does better and understands (s)he is doing and can do better, their confidence naturally increases.
