I love tutoring mathematics because when that students gets the aha moment, it makes me feel like I have accomplished what I needed to do. I am very patient with the students and always tell them not to be afraid to tell me that they don't understand what I am explaining. I will find a different way to explain things until they understand the material.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to be a guide to my students. Students need guidance and patience to help them through their studies. I also believe in looking at how the student learns the material the best and adjusting accordingly.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I first like to see exactly what they know and understand about the material so we may review a few things to reinforce their knowledge, and then get to the lessons that they are struggling with.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I sometimes give them homework to help them remember the material. The more you do something on your own, the better you get at it. For example, if the student is having trouble with some of their math because they do not know their multiplication tables, I will have them work on remembering their multiplication tables.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Excitement and positive reinforcement does wonders with students. I would always be positive to help them to keep motivated. Telling them how proud I am, or giving high fives when they got something correct, is great.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I never give up, and I find a different way to explain the concept or skill. Sometimes students will not learn the first way you explain things, and you have to be ready to do it differently.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would help them expand their vocabulary, which, in return, would help them with their reading comprehension. We would start off also reading something they can comprehend and work our way up.
