I am a graduate of Rice University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. I then attended the University School of Law at Austin, earning my Doctorate of Jurisprudence. After a career as a lawyer, and then as a Director of a large business unit in a legal publishing company, I decided to become a teacher because I know how transformational education can be. During my time as a lawyer, I gained first-hand knowledge of how difficult life can be for someone who has little education and how vulnerable they are in this world.
I have taught middle school English since 2013. While I am most passionate about tutoring Literature, Reading, and Writing, I also enjoy tutoring American History and Social Studies. I enjoy helping students understand the power and value of words. Furthermore, a student needs to see the real-world value of what they are learning. My job is to make the material relevant, so that there is a greater enthusiasm for the subject. Learning should be a rewarding experience. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, visiting art museums, walking, and watching the world famous Spurs.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Learning needs to be student-centered. My role as a teacher is to provide the necessary tools for a student to access and master the subject matter.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During my first session with a student, I want to familiarize myself with the student's interests and goals. In order for us to work as a team, we need to spend some time learning about one another.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Students become independent learners when they are actively engaged with the material. For example, when teaching literature, I may ask students to make a text-to-self connection with a novel, or I may ask them to write a "reboot" of a classic story.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Students can stay motivated when they have a clear sense of what their goal is and how they are progressing. Celebrating milestones as we work toward that goal will keep both teacher and student motivated.
