Melinda

Certified Tutor

I graduated in 2014 from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Human Nutrition. My interests included ceramic art, watching movies, hiking, and doing community service. Last year, I did a year of service with AmeriCorps here in Cincinnati. I worked with high school students and enjoyed the continuous challenges they provided. I have a plethora of tutoring experience in college where I did peer tutoring and mentored middle school students in an after-school program. I have a total of 4 years of experience working with students form first grade to 12th grade. My favorite subjects to teach are middle school math, critical reading, and nutrition. I graduated from Summit Country Day School in 2010 where I ran cross-country and track.
I thoroughly enjoy helping students as they tackle difficult problems. I believe my previous experience tutoring, my patient manner, and my ability to direct students' attention makes me a great tutor.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

A typical first session with me would include a brief introduction of my background. Then, I would ask the student about themselves. I would evaluate what subjects the students needs assistance in and set goals for future sessions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The most important part of tutoring is to never give the student the answer. As a tutor, you must guide them on a path so they can discover the answer themselves. Sometimes, this means starting over a couple of times, but it helps students become independent learners.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in a fun but firm teaching style. Every student is different, and I will accommodate his/her needs. If a student needs fun and games or short breaks to complete his/her work, we can do that.
