What is your teaching philosophy?

Learning isn't memorizing; it is a new understanding of the principles surrounding your life.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself and ask what subject the student is most interested in. I believe it is important to gauge a student's interest in a subject. If a student isn't motivated to learn you might as well be talking to a wall. You have to pique some interest into the subject you are tutoring in.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

To not only teach the information but also the necessary studying strategies that I have learned from my experiences.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Setting multiple, small goals is a good way to stay focused and motivated. It takes small steps to master a subject.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Knowledge is like a pyramid; it will be difficult to lay more bricks on top if you are missing the pieces on the bottom. I would try to dissect the issue and find the missing information that the student needs to grasp the new concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Sometimes you have to take a break and restart your brain like restarting a computer. Maybe take a step back for a few minutes and return to the reading. This time, reading a little slower and dissecting each sentence before continuing to the next one.
