Recent PCAT Writing Tutoring Session Notes
This was our first session. I had assigned him sections from the practice test. We discussed the essays, one of which he had prepared, the other of which he was a bit hesitant about. Then, we worked through a number of the verbal problems, discussing general strategies as well as addressing particular issues. With regards to math, we began working through the section I assigned. We discussed the plan for homework and assigned the appropriate problems from the prep book as an introduction both to mechanics and to basic math review: chapters 7 (arithmetic), 8 (algebra), and 11 (fractions and decimals). Likewise, I assigned the first 30 problems in each of the chapters for sentence completion and sentence equivalence.
The student and I met for one of our final session of GRE tutoring. In this session we first practiced the verbal portion. We then practiced probability as well as permutations and combinations. He seemed to understand the procedure if not the underlying concepts. We will see if this knowledge sticks.
The student and I went looked at several math sections. For each question, she told me how she would approach the question and I offered suggestions on question she had trouble with. I also emphasized question types and topics which commonly appeared on the exam. We also went over the homework she had completed.
We had an introductory session where we talked about goals for the test, went over testing basics, and practiced some verbal and quantitative question types. The student will be practicing vocabulary and taking a practice test before the next session to get an idea of her strengths and weaknesses moving forward so that we can better focus our sessions.
Covered all the verbal sections. Gave her a checklist that I use when completing SE and TC questions. For RC advised her to read slower and use an outline. The outline should help her see how one paragraph leads to another.
We worked on the essay portions and math of the student's practice test. In the essay portion, she needs to focus on tying each point to the question asked in the prompt.
In math, remember that any question involving an equation with x^2 will probably require a quadratic equation solution.
