HTML is an acronym for Hypertext Markup Language. HTML is a markup language that Internet browsers use to decipher and transform images, text, and other web components into audible or visual web pages. Back in 1980, physicist Tim Berners-Lee used to work as a contractor for CERN, aka, The European Organization for Nuclear Research. He invented ENQUIRE, a software system for researchers at CERN to use and share documents. Nine years later, Berners-Lee wrote a memo that introduced an Internet-based hypertext system which eventually developed into HTML codes.
The silent partner in almost all web development is the presentational tier of HTML. This ubiquitous markup language lies behind almost all web presentations and has done so from the earliest days of the Internet's existence.
