Recent COMPASS Mathematics Tutoring Session Notes
Tonight's progress through the advanced algebra was fairly smooth sailing; the student needs to slow down and not rush as accuracy is far more important than speed.
The student and I worked through the beginnings of his algebra book to get him prepped for manipulating basic equations. He's picking up on everything just fine. Its just a matter of reviewing everything and getting him back up to speed on different mathematical concepts.
The student and I went through a practice test covering algebra and pre-algebra topics. She did very well, and said that she felt she had improved greatly.
I had asked the student to try and complete some of the practice compass problems over the last week. From this, we found that he was actually unfamiliar with most of the math materials. We worked on specific topics in algebra, such as exponents, to help him prepare. I also worked out a plan with the student to prep him for the test in a couple weeks.
The student and I covered a number of concepts tested in the COMPASS math section, including basic trigonometry. She has decided to switch from taking the ACT to taking the COMPASS, which I think is a better fit for her. We started to cover reading strategies, and I left her with some materials to study.
Yesterday I met with both students to continue work on math. I now have a good understanding of where student 1 is and where student 2 is, so I can work with each independently while giving the other practice problems. I've continued working more closely with student 2 while giving student 1 a bit more room to work on his own. He is currently at a pre-calculus level and needs help with trig. Student 2 is at an algebra level but knows some material from algebra and geometry, and possibly algebra 2.
