CAHSEE Mathematics Tutoring FAQ
The California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) is designed to assess your capabilities in math, reading, and writing. It determines your eligibility for a high school diploma and can be intimidating. While the purpose of the exam may be to establish that a student can readily apply the academic knowledge that he or she has garnered over the course of several years of education, the thought that your entire graduation status rests in the balance of a single day of testing can freeze any student in his or her tracks. You may find that the math section is the most difficult, as is the case with many students taking the CAHSEE.
While the CAHSEE's English section provides passages that can give helpful contextual clues, math questions are presented without much additional information. You must possess a raw understanding of mathematical principles and be able to demonstrate the application of these principles at will. If your CAHSEE test date is approaching and you are beginning to worry that your graduation candidacy is in jeopardy, consider taking advantage of the CAHSEE Mathematics tutoring available throughout the state of California.
The CAHSEE Mathematics section consists of 90 multiple-choice questions, which cover topics ranging from elementary arithmetic principles to functional relationships from Algebra I. You must demonstrate a fundamental understanding of number theory; basic statistics and probability; functions; geometry; and linear relationships. Additionally, the CAHSEE tests your logical analysis and reasoning skills through questions that represent conceptual scenarios. The size of the exam and the span of subjects it covers can seem overwhelming, especially considering the significance of your score to future academic and career pursuits. You may struggle on the mathematics section of the CAHSEE as a result of the limited direction you are given through classwork.
Working with a private instructor can give you the skills to identify certain types of problems without the need for these directives. CAHSEE Mathematics tutoring can equip you with strategies and techniques for approaching the types of questions you will most likely see on test day. Even if you consider yourself more of an English student or lack confidence in your current mathematical abilities, working with a tutor can help you gain experience with the material. The one-on-one attention available through private CAHSEE Mathematics tutoring means that your instructor can provide immediate feedback tailored to your particular mathematical missteps. Such targeted assistance can make your review extremely efficient and help you develop your skill set quickly. Even if you have advanced past the CAHSEE Mathematics concepts several years prior to taking the exam, you may find yourself struggling to recall the concepts you learned before becoming immersed in calculus and linear algebra studies.
You can ask your personal instructor to arrange your tutoring sessions in any way that is convenient for you. You can take face-to-face online tutoring sessions, or meet up in person at your home. You can choose to meet at a coffee shop, the local college campus, or anywhere else you'd like. Your instructor understands that you may have other responsibilities, such as extracurricular activities, sports, or family activities that you need to take care of.
No matter where you fit in the spectrum of mathematics coursework and skill level, the educational directors at Varsity Tutors can work with you to select an instructor who can present material in the manner best suited to your individual needs. Preparing for the CAHSEE is an extremely important step for any high school student in California, don't risk your graduation status to impersonal online resources or unfocused and generalized classroom-based preparation. Contact Varsity Tutors today for more information about the CAHSEE Mathematics tutoring options available in your local area!

Recent CAHSEE Mathematics Tutoring Session Notes
Overview of the test; diagnostic review of the entire exam. She's quite smart, and will do well. I think we got better at communicating by the end of the session, and look forward to preparing her for the test!
We discussed structural verbal questions in great detail and strategies for effectively dealing with complex readings. We also reviewed vocab and complex word deconstruction strategies and understanding author perspective in long readings.
In this session we examined the essay-writing criteria in detail and discussed a practice assignment schedule that works for both of us. We worked more on a compare/contrast essay and strategies for self-editing, free-writing practice, reading practice, and general study skills.
The student has the state math test coming up this week, so we spent a good chunk of our session going over the topics that will be covered on the test. The student has a pretty good handle on most of them, but there were a few that she was confused about, including division with fractions and decimals, and converting decimals into fractions. We spent more time working on those topics and doing some practice problems so that the student could become more comfortable with them. We also worked on her science fair project a bit today, and she is doing a great job on that. She brought home her progress report and she is over 90 in all but 2 of her classes, and in those 2 she is at 88 and 89, so I'm sure she can push those over the edge as well. I'm pleased with her progress and I think she is as well.
For this session, we focused on Math and English. We did work with root words and editing for English and word problems for Math. The student is scoring very well with root words, and getting better with the error location for editing. Math is also getting better. She is now averaging an 85% there!
For Sunday, she'll complete another practice exam.
The student has his test tomorrow in math. I am confident he will do well! He has done well so far in practice tests and continues to improve. He simply needs to slow down whenever possible. Beyond this and he will do great!
