Certified Tutor
Hello! My name is Carolina, I'm 20 years old, and I'm currently studying Law at Durham University in the UK. I'm originally American, but I grew up in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
In school, I always struggled with maths and was not expected to pass my GCSE exam. I went on to get a tutor, and with her help, I achieved an A in my examination. This means I really understand the importance of not only having a tutor but a tutor who can work closely with you to build upon your own individual strengths in a subject whilst filling in any gaps. I strongly believe having a tutor is nothing to be ashamed of, and rather builds both knowledge and confidence.
At GCSE level, I tutor all sciences, English Literature, English Language, and Geography. At A Level, I tutor English Literature, Geography, and Government and Politics. I received all 7s, 8s, and 9s in my own GCSEs and A*A*A at A Level. I also completed an EPQ, which I'd be happy to help with as well! I can also provide test prep help and study skills.
I've been tutoring for over 5 years, with students who spoke English fluently and students who did not. I am comfortable adapting to a language barrier, and I can build understanding from the ground up, or build on pre-existing knowledge. Growing up abroad, I greatly value diversity and inclusion so I'm happy to work with anyone, no matter what! I can adapt my lessons to students with learning differences or difficulties, and happy to investigate new methods of teaching, having some experience with structured literacy teaching.
My sessions are often student-led, focusing on areas they believe are most beneficial. I ask students to set long-term goals that we can work towards together, facilitated by short-term goals along the way to maintain motivation. I believe that discussion is especially important to gain a better appreciation for the material being taught, so my students can expect us to bounce ideas off each other as we go through the material. This also immensely builds a pupil's confidence if they can engage in a conversation around the material, they can not only advocate for their opinions on a matter but also identify areas for further research and deeper levels of knowledge.
Whether it's opening doors to universities and colleges, getting into their dream school, facilitating social mobility later in life, or simply building someone's appreciation for the subject that they're learning, academic progress opens so many doors, and there's nothing I want more than to see a student succeed.
I look forward to working with you!

I'm a huge music fan! I love any and all genres, ranging anywhere from modern pop, to rock, and even country music. I also love to cook, my favourite dish to make is shakshouka, a Middle Eastern breakfast dish made with tomatoes and red peppers with a poached egg. I really enjoy being outside, going on walks and being with nature. One of my favourite places to be is the Durham Botanical Gardens. I also love reading, both fiction and nonfiction, and I'm always looking for book recommendations!
