While I love learning, I love helping others learn more than anything. I believe the best way to understand subjects and understand others is through learning together. I graduated from University of Illinois at Chicago with a degree in Political Science, International Studies and Gender and Women Studies. During my time in college, I worked in my university's Writing Center as an Academic Writing Tutor. To be a tutor here, you had to take a semester-long course building your peer-tutoring pedagogy while volunteering in the writing center. Here, I worked with students from the first-year writing level to PhD on their writing skills. Because my background is namely in writing, I've built my tutoring style around focused listening and conversations about the meaning behind what my student is working on. However, I received my degree in the social sciences, and would help my classmates with the course material because history, geography, and politics thoroughly interested me. I want to continue tutoring in the social sciences at all ages because I not only can pass on college-level lessons to students, but it further helps me learn and understand history and our society. Learning is always my number one objective!
Outside of my education, my true passion is the outdoors. I love hiking, kayaking, camping, gardening--anything that gets me outside. Just through spending time outside with others who share my love for it, I've learned so much about our earth and what it really means to protect it. In my every day life with friends, family, and coworkers, I find myself constantly teaching and explaining the way our natural world works (another reason I know I'm meant to be a teacher). I believe it all begins with a love of dirt--this will sprout into a love of everything else that comes from dirt. There are so many ways to be a smart, bright, developed individual, and there are so many different ways to learn. The only way to accommodate each bright mind is to believe in the potential for something great and something beautiful, which I believe every person has--the same way we believe in dirt.
