What is your teaching philosophy?

Studying analytical subjects involves both student and instructor in interactive conversations about each topic. I am a proponent of active learning and use a variety of methods and learning tools to encourage discussion and interaction on the issues. I believe the teacher is responsible for making the students feel comfortable to ask questions and seek help when needed.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would try to identify the student's strengths and weaknesses.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By building his/her confidence and self-esteem through practice and encouragement.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Students who struggle with classwork can sometimes feel frustrated and get down on themselves, draining motivation. In these situations, it's critical that teachers help students to learn exactly where they went wrong and how they can improve next time. Figuring out a method to get where students want to be can also help them to stay motivated to work hard.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I simplify the concept with a tangible example.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I introduce some textbooks to them, since reading at home reinforces the skills and concepts students must acquire.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Simplify the concepts with a real-life example. Let them know where they can use this knowledge in real life, or how the concept has been used in the industry.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By giving simple questions so s/he would be excited to move forward and discover more complex problems.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I ask them to summarize the topic at the end of each session and give them some homework.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By giving him/her different levels of questions, from easy to difficult, and teaching him/her their struggling area.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By having a conversation, and giving her/him questions to identify weaknesses.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

A great private tutor needs to be patient, enthusiastic, flexible enough to work with students with different learning styles, and an excellent communicator to interact well with students.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Books. Videos.
