Growing up in a very test-driven academic environment in China, I was very passionate about studying and developing effective learning methods. As a result, I had always been one of the best students in my school, despite the fierce competition.
Also, I gained a great sense of achievement by helping my classmates in different subjects, such as math, English or general studying guide. I gradually developed an interest in tutoring.
In 2008, I was selected to be a translator serving Beijing Olympic Games. I had an honor to share Chinese language and culture to American colleagues from Aramark. One year later, I worked in an international hotel and met people from all over the world. I love working with people!
I was offered a full-tuition scholarship in an MBA program in the U.S because of my outstanding GMAT score. I scored 720 out of 800 after one month self-study, without any sort of training.
As you can see from my personal experience, I constantly raise my own bar and will be happy to help you do so! I believe learning is a lifetime ability and it will do wonders if you follow the right path.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Teaching is about applying the right techniques to the right person and helping them apply the knowledge to practice so that they realize their full potential.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would get to know the students (their goals/passions/learning style), and I would let the students know me and gain their trust. I would also ask for feedback regarding how they want the course to be structured and I would ask them about their biggest challenges and work out a plan together.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can show them how to think about and solve problems. I can also show them how to find information themselves, as well as teach them effective self-studying methods and help them develop the right learning habits.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would work to recognize their progress and cheer them up. I would also help them keep the bigger picture in mind, and I will share some motivating stories when they feel discouraged.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try to explain it in multiple angles, use examples, role play, watch related videos, be very patient and respectful, and give the students some time to digest the material.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I like to focus on the first and the last sentence of the paragraph, skim through the content, and then break long sentences into smaller pieces. We can then analyze what causes the struggle (grammar, logical thinking, speed, etc.), and then I can try to help with that specific area.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I would work on building trust and a rapport, and I would learn about their story and what motivates them. I would also be willing to make adjustments to better suit their needs.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would give them an easier task and guide them through the process. Once they see their results, they will understand it's not that hard. I can show them some fun facts or entertaining material related to the subject
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would ask questions in great detail, use role play for practice, and I would ask them to explain the material in their own words.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I would praise all of their progress, and I would promote a can-do attitude. We can start with easier exercises and then gradually move onto the next level.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I would ask them questions directly to get answers about their educational needs. I would learn from my observations, and I would then give them tests or exercises to evaluate their weaknesses.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I will ask them about their needs and try to come up with a plan that fits those needs. I will also make adjustments on the plan whenever necessary.

Handouts, related videos, index cards, etc.
