I grew up as an a military brat, moving 18 times before graduating college! This required me to constantly acclimate to different standards and teaching styles. Fortunately, my father was very focused on my academic performance. He ensured that no matter where we lived, I had an environment that challenged me. By the time I graduated high school, I was one of the 10% of applicants accepted into the United States Military Academy at West Point.
At the United States Military Academy, I served as a tutor for all class years. My subjects included Composition 101, Advanced Composition, general essay editing, and Portuguese. In 2010, I had the opportunity to study in Rio de Janeiro at Brazil's Military Engineering Institute. While in Brazil, I also worked as an English tutor.
After graduating West Point, I commissioned as an officer in the United States Army. As a Logistics Officer, I worked for bosses with many different specialties. This required me to translate how my Soldiers' capabilities could enhance the performance for a combat arms mission. Additionally, the Soldiers I worked with came from all over the world! Interacting with them taught me the importance of observation. By observing others, I was able to interact with them in a way that ensured we remained on the same page and accomplished what we needed to do.
Often times, Soldiers I worked with were taking night classes or completing degrees online. These Soldiers often asked me for assistance with their writing assignments. I found it very fulfilling to be able to help them gain confidence in writing, especially because they often helped me gain confidence with different aspects of our job.
I retired from the Army as a Captain, and am now pursuing my master's degree in Logistics Management. I applied for a position with Varsity Tutors because it offers me flexibility and the opportunity to do something I enjoy. I am happy they selected me to be one of their tutors and hope that you will consider selecting me as well!

What is your teaching philosophy?
Writing and reading comprehension are skills that you use beyond the academic world and the workplace. They allow you to connect with others, to build relationships and communicate thoughts and ideas. These skills also offer the ability to take the reader or author to alternate worlds on a vacation of the mind. My goal is to increase your understanding and ability to perform. I want to help you build the fundamental skills that will enable you to excel in these arenas now and in the future. Our short term goal is to help you grasp what you need to improve your grades or test scores. Our long term goal is to build your confidence to the point tutoring in these realms is no longer required. Your responsibilities are to communicate the struggles you face and to try your best. If a technique I give you is not working, we will try another until we find what methodology speaks to you.
