Certified Tutor

My venture into the career as a college professor has really sparked my interest in education and learning. I have discovered teaching is an extremely gratifying career and I am not only instructing but learning along with the students. I enjoy the fact that I can pass on knowledge to my students and they can also teach me ways to improve my instructing skills and class curriculum. I have been fortunate to have taught classes in the Forensic Science field in which I am not only experienced but passionate about. I also am experienced in Biology and Medical Terminology. I have tried to develop a stimulating environment where learners are not just taking notes and sitting in class, but also performing hands on experiments and projects. I really enjoy evaluating the students not only by their knowledge on the subject but also their creativity in expressing that knowledge. I believe this may be a refreshing approach learning and keeping the subject interesting.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to get to know my students and what they are interested in and what is their best method of learning. I tell my students a little about myself and ask them questions about themselves as well to break the ice.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I like to give my students skills that allow them to research information on their own. I like to provide information on resources where they can find valid information and learning tools to help them with their success.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I love to encourage students! Providing them with helpful knowledge and giving them useful information on how to become a more confident student is great positive reinforcement that they can use in their learning careers.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would evaluate what they know about the topic, and then work with them to figure out where they are having difficulty. I would also provide visual aids and learning materials to guide them through the learning process.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

By breaking down the reading assignment, I find that taking it in small pieces helps the student grasp what they are reading. I also provide examples that relate to the material so they retain the information.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know the student is key. Understanding how they learn and what would be best for them to learn the subject is a must for their success.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

When you make the subject fun and not mundane, students seem to enjoy it more and then learning it becomes easier.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Short quizzes and question and answer sessions help students remember the information. Repetition is also a good practice to remember the information.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Positive reinforcement is always helpful. Encouraging them when they miss something and then praising them when they accomplish a goal.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Getting to know the student and asking them certain questions to get to the root of their academic issue can point me in the direction of where they need the most help. Communication is the key!

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Students learn differently, so finding out how to get the information across to them in the most effective manner is important. I use a variety of teaching techniques to best fit students.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I like to use PowerPoint, certain interactive internet resources, real-life examples, and reading materials, just to name a few.
