What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
  1. Introductions, program conventions, and scheduling are discussed. 2. Ask what the student hopes to achieve from the session(s). 3. Discuss the student's strengths and challenges. 4. Lay out my/our plan for their educational success.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I like to give a student suggestions for self-study, and accept responsibility for their own improvement…and steer them clear of "the blame game."

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Mostly through modeling: I like to think that my enthusiasm for learning, and self-improvement, is infectious (in a + way). Of course, I also apply behavior modification techniques to bolster the message.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I revise my approach: that may include using different examples, analogies, and/or modalities. The main "tool," in these cases, is to ALWAYS remain positive and supportive. Stress is the enemy of success!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Encourage them to read more. Suggest and make available age appropriate reading materials, that are written for (or slightly below) their level. Read with them - and then discuss what you've read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I let them know that I am 100% rooting for, and confident in, their success.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I am excited about that subject, and it shows. Further, I will point out how important it is, and possibly, that it is for them to get past their temporary block.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Pre and post "tests" are an integral part of every good lesson. They may work some problems from a textbook, ditto sheet, or verbally.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

The student's confidence will grow as they learn, and then practice. Carefully guiding the practice sessions, so as to allow the student to build on what they already know.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Mostly through discussing their school situation with them and/or their parents. The problem areas are almost always forthcoming.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
  1. Ascertain what the needs are, through questioning and observation. 2. Use my considerable training and experience to formulate a plan.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

1.The student's texts and assignments. 2. Pencil, paper, rulers, and breath freshener.
