I love to teach, and I love to work with kids. I want to help them be successful in every aspect of their academic life. I went to the Saint Louis University and received a bachelor's degree in general education I minored in English and Adult Contemporary Spirituality, which was sort of by accident, I just really enjoyed those classes, and the Professors who taught them. Then I went to the University of Missouri-St. Louis and obtained my first Masters of Education in Elementary Education.

That was a challenge even for a person who loves school and learning new information. And it could have been that I also had just started my teaching career, so I was also learning how to be a teacher and going to school, really hard school too. so I was teaching 6th grade all subjects at a PreK to 6th grade elementary school. and I had relatively small class sizes like in my second year, I only had 11 students. And they were all really good kids. so it was more like we were just hanging out and discussing really important topics and sharing our thoughts on them with each other. I wish every new teacher could have a year like that. I taught at that school a few more years and then I kind of thought to myself wouldn't it be nice if instead of teaching and preparing 20 lessons a week I only had to do 5 really good ones? So I went to teach Language Arts at a middle school. and I was assigned to teach 6th grade again, and I was happy with that. It is a whole different teaching experience to have 27 6th graders for one 90 minute class than ten to 15 for the whole day. And then have 25 entirely different kids for the next 90 minute class. and then I had 23 you got more new kids for another 90 minutes. that is a lot of names to learn!!! And... sooooo many papers to read and correct. and record and keep track of and then hand back, then pick up off the floor and throw away, sigh. Despite all that I had 3 other 6th grade ELA teachers to hangout with and we all became great friends. well after a year and a half I started to get that itch. you know the one you try and try but can't quite reach. Well I found out it was the need to learn something new! So, I enrolled in Park University located in of all places, Parkville. MO.

I started June of 2019 an online cohort program to get a Masters Degree in Educational Technology. I had always considered myself to be rather good at working with technology, at my first school I was the technology liaison with our district IT department, I was the person who set up and helped monitor the new programs our students used on their iPad. It was like that at the middle school too. and in the medical office I worked in before I became a teacher. But this class was like wow, so cool. we learned so much new and amazing things to do with technology that I had no idea even existed. I learned about teaching students how to record and publish their very own podcasts, how to take a PowerPoint or Google slide and make them into a narrative movie. I learned how to make my own interactive games for my class to play. Oh the places I learned I could go. Then there came the PANDEMIC and one Friday I told my kids to have a great weekend, and that turned into a half year of no school, and a year off Google Meet or Zoom school. But I now had a year of my Technology program done and I a good teacher became a Rock Star teacher. So much so that my school asked me a 6th year teacher to lead our school in professional development. for extra pay! Oh, how I love the power of learning. I graduated from my Technology program in August of 2021 with a perfect GPA of 4.0!!

Now I know you have read a great deal of information about me, and how super nerdy I am about learning and you have to be saying OMG what is up. I want to inspire you to become just as nerdy about learning new things as I am. and I know you have heard the saying that knowledge is power.

Well, I am living proof that learning can be fun and inspiring and helpful and exciting. Let your inner nerd out with me.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all kids have the potential to be successful in learning if they have the right guidance.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would want to talk with them and find out what they are having trouble with, and maybe why they are having trouble.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving them the necessary tools to find answers they need to be successful. And have a desire to find the answers on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By helping them be successful, and once they are successful and get a taste of it, I would hope they would want more.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to find another way to explain it to them, or help them find a way to solve the problem.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would go back to reading basics and teach them how to pick the text apart, and go over it with them step by step.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Doing an interest survey with them and find out what motivates them, what they like, how they learn best and so on. Also find out what they have difficulty understanding.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By celebrating each little success they have in that subject until they are excited about it themselves, and have the growth mindset that they can be successful if they work hard.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Most of the time, a summative assessment of some sort and by looking at work they do on their own.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By celebrating all the accomplishments in that subject, and showing them that they are capable of doing the work on their own.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Speaking with them and their parents, giving them a baseline assessment and by listening to what they tell me they need help with.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

First by assessing what the student’s needs are, and then by finding ways to meet them where they are academically.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The student’s text and homework, along with supplemental work that I find on the internet or that I have access to by being a teacher.
