Chyann

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language and Culture with a minor focus in Anthropology. After graduating I began work with a not-for-profit organization that serves youth 12-years-old and older with developing their social-emotional skills and leadership skills through experiential education at at a 265 acre adventure course facility in New Jersey. I fell in love with the work and philosophy that people, and especially children, learn best by doing. It is an approach to teaching and tutoring that I believe in and practice, especially now that I work as a Teacher's Assistant at a childcare center, servicing children 2-4 years old. I believe firmly in youth empowerment through education and social competency, so they may be global-minded citizens and contributors. I have also worked in schools with a not-for-profit organization in Brooklyn that services students in public schools as an independent contractor. We have created essay competitions and innovative game-shows to help children learn and engage with their educators creatively. The subjects I am most excited to tutor in are English and Writing, since I am passionate about language and writing. In my spare time I enjoy reading, journaling, macrame, and dancing.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students can learn. When a student's learning style is treated as an aptitude the student can excel.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student I would begin with icebreaker questions and games to begin to establish trust, communication and respect with the student and their parent or guardian.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by always testing for understanding and allowing time for the student to attempt challenges on his or her own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by positively praising and reinforcing their achievements in understanding. It is important to me that the student accept and know that making mistakes is crucial to the learning process, therefore I would offer extra support if a student becomes discouraged by mistakes.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept I would have the patience to review and approach a concept from a different and new perspective, starting with the elementary elements of the concept and build understanding step by step, layer by layer.
