What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself and let the student introduce himself. I then ask him what his needs are and how can we come up with the best solution.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The best way to become an independent learner is to show him how to gather the resources on his own and how to successfully use them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

The best way to motivate a student is to listen to her needs and breakdown the problem in an easy matter so she can solve the problem successfully.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I listen to her concerns and try several different methods to solve the problem.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

There are six steps I use for reading comprehension. 1) Make connections. 2) Ask questions. 3) Create “mind movies.” 4) Make inferences. 5) Figure out what’s important. 6) Monitor comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I always try to make a student feel comfortable and allow her to express herself so she feels comfortable asking me questions.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

The best way for me to get a student engages in a course is to show her the importance of the course and that she can successfully complete the problems.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Ask questions about the material. Then give them short quizzes to evaluate their performance.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

The best way to boost confidence is to give them problems they can understand and give them resources to successfully solve a problem.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

To evaluate a student's needs is to ask him what is expected of him in the course.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Some students need to be coached, while others need to be taught the topic before we get started.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The materials I use are: Textbooks, Classroom notes, Videos, Whiteboard, Quizzes, Online resources

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy in teaching is to give each student the power of knowledge.
