Kathleen

Certified Tutor

I am a senior at Monmouth University majoring in psychology. Upon graduation, I will begin a doctoral program in clinical psychology with a specialization in neuropsychology. I have extensive experience working as a peer tutor at Monmouth University helping fellow students succeed. Through this experience, I became a certified college level tutor and learned how to accommodate students with various learning styles such as visual or auditory. I have also learned how to assist students with mastering time management, organizational, and effective study strategies. I have a passion for tutoring because I enjoy sharing my own insight with a particular subject and help students learn to love the subject material. Although I tutor a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about psychology and assisting students with essay writing. I believe the key to being successful in school is connecting the material to a student's own life. I am dedicated to helping students connect the dots between school subjects and real life scenarios. In my experience, learning can always be enjoyable (even meticulous APA formatting!).

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will break the concept down into smaller sections in order to best pinpoint what the student needs clarified.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will connect the subject to scenarios in the student's everyday life. It is much easier to get excited about a subject when you encounter the concepts in your everyday life outside of school.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

First, I quiz the students on main concepts/ideas. Then I ask the student questions that require applying the concept to assure they truly understand the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Instead of pointing out what the student does not understand, I start by helping the student realize all the aspects of a subject they are skilled in. Students are usually much stronger in subjects than they realize.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I modify my instructions to best fit the student's learning style. For example, if the student is a visual learner I incorporate graphs, charts and pictures into the session whenever possible.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Everything! I believe learning is most successful when all materials/methods are utilized. I typically refer to the student's notes and textbooks along with supplemental materials such as videos.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First I like to get to know the student better to best understand the student's difficulties and learning styles. Also, once I am familiar with a student's interests/hobbies I work to connect the subject material to relevant examples the student may enjoy.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help provide students with all the tools they need to learn on their own. For example, I would work to be sure the student has strong time management, study, organization, and note-taking skills.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I try to remind the student of all the progress they have already made so they are motivated to continue. I also utilize positive reinforcement whenever possible to keep students from getting discouraged.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I encourage the student to be an 'active' reader. This includes taking the time to slowly read and re-read through the passage and take notes along the way.
