Christopher

Certified Tutor

I graduated from Wheaton College in 2015 with a double major in Archaeology and Geology. In the future I plan on going to graduate school to get my PhD in Archaeology. I have always loved teaching people about subjects that I myself am passionate about. In the long term I would like to be a college professor, teaching archaeology at a university.

My favorite subject to tutor is archaeology, followed by history. Archaeology is an interesting subject because new archaeological discoveries have the ability to change our interpretation of the past. I also teach geology and social studies.
My teaching style is all about helping students to learn information with context, fostering their ability to think for themselves. Outside of academia I play guitar and teach wilderness survival. I enjoy archery, woodworking, and making stone tools.

What is your teaching philosophy?

The human mind is mankind's greatest asset.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would listen to the student and find out what areas they most need work on, and then I would develop a plan that is catered to that student's learning style in order to best teach them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Foster a love of learning that exists outside the classroom.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Words of encouragement, and relating lessons to students' lives.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Use a different approach to teaching that concept; find out why they find it difficult and address that issue.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Practice is key, and so is vocabulary.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

See if the student can explain the concept in their own words. Quiz the student on study material.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It depends on what I’m teaching.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Empathy is the fundamental human characteristic that educators need to have.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find out where the student's interests overlap with the material they are struggling with.
