I am a people person, and I enjoy helping and being of assistance. I have a lot of patience, and am very creative. I find that people of all ages struggle with some sort of learning curve. Finding what works for each person individually is how to teach. Everyone learns differently. Some people are great listeners and do great with dictation, while some need to be hands on, and some people also just are visual learners. Understanding the person you are helping, and learning a little bit about them helps and goes a long way.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Find what works for that person... everyone learns differently.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Find the best way they learn, and more importantly, what they DON'T like or what DOES NOT work, so I can work out a plan. Also, what they like, their hobbies, interests, etc., to make the tutoring interesting for them.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Encouragement.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Make sure they are having fun, or at least, trying to make it interesting for them so they will actually WANT to do the work and be involved.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Be patient, understand what is not working, and keep trying new things/new methods to find what does work.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
This is where I have the most experience. Kids need to have someone spend time with them to get them to do it themselves. They have to feel confident, and if not they will not try. Again, games, fun stuff, different methods help get them to do it.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
It's all based on their interests and finding what works for them.
