Christian

Certified Tutor

I am current student pursuing a career in Biomedical Engineering. I graduated Nassau Community College as a Summa Cum Laude with a 3.94 GPA with an Associates in Science. I am currently working on earning my Bachelors in Biomedical Engineering at City College of New York where I currently have a 3.90 GPA. I tutor Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Calculus 2. My favorite one to teach is algebra because I believe it is the foundation where everything comes from. I am just happy to be able to help other students better understand math and hopefully help them see that it is not just random numbers. As an aspiring engineer, I see applications of mathematics on the daily and I would love to share the knowledge that I have received with fellow students.

Hobbies

Doing Math of course! Other than that, I also love to cook, dance, eat, listen to music, and having a real conversation.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Mathematics is not all numbers and computations. It is also about understanding the theories and applications. Once understood and coupled with enough practice, math will be easy.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself and make sure that the student is not intimidated. I will try to make sure that the first meeting is not awkward. I will also try to gauge the student's level of understand so that I can adapt my ways of teaching.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will show them different way of learning. As a college student, I often find myself self-teaching. I will show them how that is done.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will try to make math as interesting as I can.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will use an easier example, but in the end I will just keep trying until they comprehend the material very well.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I found that explaining the theories or why certain computations are being done to be helpful. Then I move onto simple examples and gradually get harder. I also give my own questions to the student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will try to keep it interesting and let them know that it is fine if they do not understand it in the beginning. Eventually they will, especially if motivated enough. I will show them that sometimes it can be challenging but the satisfaction of getting an answer right is far greater.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I will give them a self-made test.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Paper, pen or pencil, a textbook (if the student brings their own), and the internet.
