Certified Tutor

I received my Bachelor's degree in Social Science from Robert Morris University. I am currently working as an Instructional Aide in the greater Pittsburgh area. I am qualified to tutor US and European History as well as Government.

I am a firm believer that the best way to encourage learning is to create an environment where students are not afraid to speak their minds. This creates both higher learning and a more informal way to assess student knowledge. An environment that encourages higher learning is especially effective for those studying social studies due to the increasing importance of analysis and critical thinking based assessments in a classroom setting.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that the best teaching environments are ones in which students are unafraid to answer questions and state their opinions. This creates an atmosphere that encourages creativity and higher learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, I would need to find out what the student is currently covering in their social studies class. I would then choose some multiple-choice questions to assess their comprehension of the material. After that, I would go over the results, giving a simple summary of each of the questions. This both clarifies any of the questions the student got wrong, and clarifies those the student got right. Finally, with the remaining time left, I would help the student work through the upcoming graded assignment.
