I am a mechanical engineering student who will graduate from The City College of New York this December. I hope to pursue a career in the energy industry once I graduate. I believe that this industry is the key in helping improve our environment for future generations and I hope to be involved in its effort to expand technologies in renewable energy.
As an engineering student, I learned that knowing the right answer is not necessarily the most important thing. It is more important to learn how to solve a problem. When I encounter a problem that seems impossible, instead of simply giving up, I go back to my basics. Instead of focusing on what I do not know, I look at what information is given to me. I also look at the problem from a different angle to see if it is another way to solve the problem.
I hope to teach students that despite how challenging a problem may appear, they shouldn't feel discouraged. They should know that there is always a way to solve it.

Show the student how it is applicable in his or her life.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Try another approach.

Encourage a student to write a journal.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Changing the teaching style so the student does not get bored.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Teach the student how it is applicable in his or her life.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would ask sample problems.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
One can build confidence by motivating a student to expand his or her knowledge on the subject.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
One can evaluate a student's needs through sample problems or simply asking.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By evaluating the student's needs, I can adjust the pace at which a topic is being taught.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Sample problems found in a variety of places like the Internet or workbooks.
