What is your teaching philosophy?

Fun and interactive.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to break the ice and get to know a bit about each other. I want to know what their goals and expectations are.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will give them the tools and resources they need to get the information they need at any time.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will check up with my student periodically on their progress. I will also set weekly goals for them.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Find a different way to help them understand and absorb the information. We all learn and retain differently.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will help them practice. Repetition and consistency helps. It takes training to master any skill.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that getting to know how they work and their personalities through building rapport helps me cater to their style.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find fun real life examples of how what they learn can relate to and benefit them.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would question them in different ways. I'd use oral and written answers to make sure the material is retained.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

You give constructive praise. I make them have a sense of their incremental progress whether big or small.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I will ask them (and their parents) what the purpose of the tutoring lessons are.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Every student is different, and we all respond to different stimuli. Some are more visual (diagrams, graphs, etc.). Others favor oral or written comprehension.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use the curriculum material for the sessions. However, I may have articles or videos that search, which I feel are suited for the subject at hand.
