What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that everyone has potential, and you just have to be patient with students until they understand, because everyone learns on different levels.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session with a student, I would first begin with an introduction. Then, I would find out exactly what they are struggling with and try to figure out their best learning style.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner with different study tips, depending on the type of learner they are. If they are visual learners, I would direct them to helpful videos. If they learn from doing, I would supply practice problems and advise them of where they can find them on their own, etc.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by trying to make the tutoring session somewhat interesting and try to relate the problems to real world applications. I would also tell students to reward themselves (or reward them myself if I meet with them in person) when they do well on a test or assignment.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to explain it in another way, and if I am unable to do so, I would try to find a video or another method to teach the same concept. If neither of those worked, I would continue to work with the student hopefully until they understood the skill or concept.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help a student get excited and engaged by relating problems to real world applications or even their personal lives.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

To make sure that the student understands the material, I would explain the problem to them, do a couple of problems with them, and then ask them to do at least one problem on their own.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence by reinforcing that they are doing well, and if they do not understand something, I would let them know that it is okay and that if we work through the problem a few more times I am sure they will understand.
